THE ROCKS WINDMILL
Inspired by The Rocks’ colonial windmill era, Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority (SHFA) launched ‘The Rocks Windmill’ in 2013, a striking large-scale temporary installation that acted as a functioning wheat-grind as well as a vibrant and intimate 40-seat venue. The Windmill played host to a month-long cultural event program with innovative project features, theatre and film screenings, visual arts and interactive installations, workshops and historical tours - all of which were designed to entertain and educate visitors on The Rocks’ heritage and natural environment.
* To maximise attendance at The Windmill, Cardinal Spin undertook a multi-tiered communications approach, targeting mainstream media in addition to key arts, technology, design, culture and events publications.
* Over the course of the campaign, Cardinal Spin generated more than 200 media placements across major print, broadcast and digital media outlets, with noteworthy stories appearing in the Daily Telegraph, Sydney Morning Herald, Sun Herald, Timeout and Central Magazine.
* The Windmill also received strong coverage in broadcast media, with stories and interviews running on ABC News 24, Sydney Weekender, Channel Ten’s The Project, as well as on 2GB, ABC 702, FBi and 2SER.
* Cardinal Spin also planned and executed a launch event for SHFA stakeholders, government, arts industry and media guests. The event ran for two hours in The Rocks Square and had over 250 guests attend. The event generated large amounts of media coverage and interest in The Windmill itself throughout the arts and wider community.
